This is “Zephyr Dancing with Flora”
at the Detroit Institute of Arts
by Giovanni Maria Benzoni, 1870, marble.
Emily and I visited the DIA recently and spent some time just observing, appreciating, and talking about particular pieces we saw. This is one that was really inspired us. I found that in my attempt to photograph it, I noticed many details that I would not have noticed in just looking. Even in their toes it’s expressing their innocent excitement and joy! Every detail expresses in its own way a soft joyous excitement. What do you find when you look at this sculpture?
